Power BI - Data Sources

Tags Power-BI

Power BI service, also known as Power BI online, connects to various data sources, allowing users to create interactive reports and dashboards. Power BI service also provides a Scheduled Refresh feature for data sets imported into Power BI. This feature allows data sets to be automatically updated at specific intervals. Users can configure the frequency of the refreshes according to their needs. Our organisation uses data from three major sources described below:

  1. Banner: This data source deals with majority of student related data that consists of general student data, student financial aid data and student accounts data.
  2. Degree Tracker: The data consists of the progress made by student towards the completion of their respective major/degrees
  3. Slate CRM: Data flowing from slate keeps a brief record of a new/existing students' admission applications

The data from all these sources is pulled and transformed into ODS (data mart made for specific functional areas) which flows then into Power BI. Additionally, new specifications and definitions corresponding to the Power BI reports/dashboards are added accordingly into data cookbook.
